Greenway Promenade

The Classroom of the Future is a collaborative project between TIES and The Cuningham Group in Minneapolis to demonstrate what learning spaces might look like in the future. Four different groups of teachers and students, from elementary through middle school, will use the room across disciplines to show how design and technology integrate to personalize a learning space to the needs of each student. Activity topics will include creation of electronic publications, technology for reading comprehension, persuasive expression through animation and much more. Conference participants are free to tour the room and interact with teachers and students.


St. Michael-Albertville School District - Common Craft Videos (Tuesday, 1:20-3:15)


Students from St. Michael-Albertville school district modeled how to create Common Craft videos, as well as ways to incorporate QR codes, and iPads equipped with Popplet and Animoto to answer Document Based Questions in history class. The lead presenters were Erik Ditlevson and Ryan Canton, both 8th grade history teachers in St. Michael-Albertville School District.

Purpose: To take a complex topic, and make it easy to udnerstand through the use of a well written and easy to understand video that includes a easy to understand narration and visuals that help explain the topic.

Teacher Tips:
  • Allow at least 5 full class periods for students to successfully complete the project
  • Practice, practice, practice...student groups need to practice to be successful with filming
  • Have students prepare their scripts in Google Docs - shared with their whole group and you - this allows total collaboratin and makes it easier for you to provide feedback
  • Allow only 10 minutes for a group to film - they should film their video without stopping, no editing will be necessary
  • Chose mixed ability groups - this will help to enforce the cooperative and collaborative nature of the project

Salem Hills Elementary School (Monday, 1:20-3:15)


Third Grade Students at Salem Hills Elementary School in Inver Grove Heights will share some of the ways we use technology in the classroom. We will demonstrate how we use iPod Touch for reading fluency.

When I was in 7th grade, something remarkable happened that changed my life in a wonderful way. An amazing teacher, Jim Matson, pulled me aside for drawing in class, instead of paying attention. Rather than scolding me, Mr. Matson asked me to try a project, tapping into art and storytelling to help other students understand a math concept. Dizzy with excitement, I ran off to make a comic book. I cracked open the dense math text book and saw, for the first time, that these numbers were only ways of quantifying things and actions. Things and actions I could see and put to paper. When I brought in the completed project, Mr. Matson didn't just see a comic book, but also a storyboard. "You've got the beginnings of an animated film if you're interested." A few months later, I had finished my first animated film designed to teach. And now I do the same professionally through my stories, films and the company I founded, FableVision. My journey has been dedicated to helping kids, especially the "off the path" kids. I was one of them myself. Not every student is lucky enough to have a teacher, or adult, see his or her potential. When I visit students in schools they ask me what my hobbies are. I say thinking, dreaming. If my art and stories can help inspire others to do the same, I'll feel my life had meaning. Peter

Will Steger - Explorer, Educator, Environmentalist
A formidable voice calling for understanding and the preservation of the Arctic, and the Earth, Will Steger is best known for his legendary polar explorations. He has traveled tens of thousands of miles by kayak and dogsled for more than 45 years, leading teams on some of the most significant polar expeditions in history, earning him the Lifetime Achievement award from National Geographic Adventure Magazine in 2007. Will led the first confirmed dogsled journey to the North Pole without re-supply in 1986, the 1,600-mile south-north traverse of Greenland (the longest unsupported dogsled expedition in history) in 1988, and led the first dogsled traverse of Antarctica (the historic seven month, 3,741-mile International Trans-Antarctica Expedition) in 1989–90. Will has continued his commitment to education and exploration through the Will Steger Foundation. Recent expeditions have included a dynamic online component and have taken Will and his expedition teams to Ellesmere Island and Baffin Island in Canada's High Arctic.
