Turn the iPad into a powerful tool of formative assessment. Experience how iPads shift the climate and culture of classrooms when teachers emphasize feedback and collaboration. This presentation will model the use of iPad as a tool for immediate, near-future and student-led tactical adjustments to learning.

Our presentation is organized by James Popham's Applications of Formative Assessment. We will cover iPad and Web-based tools that aid teachers in making immediate and near-future instructional adjustments, and suggestions teachers can give students for making tactical adjustments to their learning. Finally, we'll discuss how the iPad can help shift the climate and culture of your classroom.

Immediate Instructional Adjustment
Gather data, analyze it real-time and adjust instruction appropriately. Preparation is key. Must predict students errors (they're not random) and have a go-to adjustment prepared when students don't understand.

Show-Me

ShowMe Interactive Whiteboard for iPad on the iTunes App Store

Use show me for students to do a math problem by writing and recording their process and save. Then show to peers who are struggling and need a review. Student becomes the teacher and reinforces both.

Use Show-Me for A,B,C,D Corner Cards -- Ask a question that has no right or wrong answer. Ask students to choose the option that most closely aligns with their belief. Separate the groups into 4 corners, and have them create an argument (using iPad as a resource for evidence) for why their answer is best. Present the arguments and allow for students who were persuaded to move groups!

Students can mirror their iPad through Apple TV and show their work immediately upon request

When students mirror their work through apple TV, thus displaying it up front for the class, use Dylan Wiliam's "2 Stars and Wish" method of providing peer to peer feedback. Provide students' with specific criteria to determine two things they like about another student's work and one thing they wish for.

Near-future Instructional adjustment
Collect data at the end of class and analyze it to inform the next day or next few days of instruction. Develop a sustained learning progression and measure the extent to which students have mastered each sub-set within that progression.

Naiku empowers students to reflect and self-assess. It is an entirely different assessment experience in that it assesses what students know and allows them to reflect on why they know it.
